- Bessie Henderson
Funeral services for Bessie Henderson were held February 13, 1999, at the Hart Memorial Chapel in Westville with Rev. Ralph Cannon officiating. Interment was in the Westville City Cemetery under the direction of Hart Funeral Home of Westville.
Bessie Henderson was born January 14, 1908 in Kingston, Ark., to William Lee and Edith (Wright) Hillard. She spent most of her youthful days in Pettigrew, Ark., where her father operated a sawmill and made barrel staves. She departed this life February 10, 1999, in Claremore, at the age of 91 years and 26 days.
She married John F. Henderson on December 20, 1942, in Dallas, Texas. They owned and operated the Akin Lumber Co. in Westville. John preceded her in death in 1965. After his death, Bessie continued Henderson Investments which she closed in the 1980s. She donated to the building of the John Henderson Public Library in memory of her husband. She also donated to the building of the Adair County Health Center and was a member of the hospital board. On July 18, 1977, Bessie married John E. Leerskov in Las Vegas, Nev.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W.L. and Edith Hillard, and two husbands, John F. Henderson and John E. Leerskov.
Bessie is survived by one cousin, Gail Hudson of Huntsville, Ark.; one step-son, Noel Leerskov and his wife Alice of Claremore; one step-daughter Sharon Simmons of Death Valley, Calif., and five step-grandchildren. (Stilwell, Okla.. Democrat-Journal, Thursday, February 18, 1999, page 12.)
