Mr. Ortus Webb "O.W." Barnett, Jr., 71, of Holly Springs, NC died Thursday, July 29, 2010, at the Duke Hospice Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, NC.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Phyllis M. Barnett; and his children, Craig Barnett and wife, Blanka Barnett of Fuquay-Varina, Jeffrey Barnett and wife, Jill Scheidt of Knoxville, TN, Bryan Barnett of Lexington, MA; three granddaughters, Alexandra, Ashley, and Sedona; and one sister, Eril Hughes and husband, Michael Hughes.
O.W. was born in Pine Bluff, AR on July 2, 1939, the son of O.W. Barnett, Sr. and Mittie Ruth Barnett, both deceased. He earned a B.S. and M.S. in Plant Pathology from the University of Arkansas followed by a PhD from the University of Wisconsin. O.W. joined the faculty of Clemson University in 1969 focusing his research and teaching on plant viruses that impact crops key to the global diet and economy. He was active in the American Phytopathological Society (APS) and served as president of the society in 1991. From 1992 to 2002, O.W. was the department head of the N.C. State University Department of Plant Pathology. He retired from the University in 2004.
O.W. was active in the Baptist Church throughout his life. He volunteered his time and talents for many community organizations. After his retirement, O. W. enjoyed delivering for Meals on Wheels and volunteering with the clothing ministry at First Baptist Church, Raleigh.
The memorial service will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, August 2, 2010 at the First Baptist Church, 99 North Salisbury Street in Raleigh with Dr. Christopher Chapman officiating.
