      Lexington - Bernard Woods, Sr., formerly of Frankfort, passed away May 29, 2014, at his home in Lexington, Kentucky after a long battle with cancer.

      Mr. Woods served with the Army in the South Pacific during WWII. He was a long-time resident of and farmer in Franklin County. He later became an employee of state Department of Finance and retired from there when he was 75 years old. He was a member of Buck Run Baptist Church. Later in life, he enjoyed taking Shockey tours to see our country, where he also met his wife, Jeanette. He loved watching western shows, country music, dabbling in genealogy, playing his guitar and singing.

      Mr. Woods, 88 years old, was born on August 21, 1925, in Henry County, Kentucky to Purvis (Big Boy) and Virginia Simpson Woods. He had seven brothers and three sisters. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Edna Jane Wright Woods; two stepsons, Lawrence Wayne Thurman and Lindsay Stuart Thurman (Brenda), a grandson, Richard Allen Smither and five brothers, Allen, Cecil, Elmer, Guy and Joe and three sisters, Cora Wanda Woods Lewis, Lillie Woods Newby and Louise Woods Cottongim.

      He is survived by his wife of twelve years, Jeanette Rappleyea Rion Woods; two daughters, Mae Belle Lewis (Bobby -- deceased), Sandra Kay Gosney (Bill-deceased); one son, Bernard Woods, Jr. (Angie), a very special niece, Dora Ann Newby Ballard (Billy) all of Frankfort; four step-sons, Guy Rion (Michelle) of Cynthiana, Scott Rion (Leslie) of Lexington, Todd Rion (Pam) of Hamilton, Ohio, Marty Rion (Regina) of Nicholasville; two step-daughters, Donna Rion of Lexington and Jan Rion Dean (Stephen) of Nicholasville; two brothers, Dewey Woods and Arley Jackson Woods (Glenda) of Clarksville, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Gail Sowers (Eric) of Wilmore; Kathy D. Gosney of Lawrenceburg, Kerry Lea Gosney (Scott Malone) of Corning, New York, Kayce Neil Gosney (Kim) and Robert Scott Smither (Renee) of Frankfort, Matthew Bernard Woods ( Miharu) of Clarksville, Tennessee , and Kenneth Wayne Smither of Somerset, several step-grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great, great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

      Arrangements are under the direction of Harrod Brothers Funeral Home. Visitation and funeral services will be at the funeral home, with visitation being from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 2014, and the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014. Andy Rutrough, Interim Pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Lexington and Dr. Hershael York of Buck Run Baptist Church will conduct the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.       Active pallbearers will be Andrew Ballard, Kayce Gosney, Marty Rion, Scott Rion, Kenneth Wayne Smither and Robert Scott Smither. Alternate pallbearers will be Logan Sowers and Kristopher Hammond.
