PRATER, Rachel Marie (86) of Los Angeles, died Sunday, March 23, 2003. She was born October 11, 1916 at Tahlequah, Okla., daughter of the late Daniel Webster Wade and Vina Nissen Leerskov. Rachel and her parents settled in Los Angeles in January, 1924 and she graduated from Jefferson High School in 1935. She married George Lewis Prater on August 31, 1935 and they settled at South Gate in 1938, where they resided until her husband's death in 1999. She became a resident of Hollenbeck Home in Los Angeles in 2000. Rachel was an active member of the South Gate community for many years, and was honored as the South Gate Azalea Festival Queen in 1993. Among her many activities, she served as volunteer for the Lanterman Developmental Center where she made clothes, robes, dolls and other necessities for the mentally and physically impaired. Each December, she conducted a drive to collect toys and clothing for children in the Los Angeles County Foster Care Program, and provided countless hours of volunteer work with the Los Angeles County Department of Children's Services, providing clothes, layettes, toys, and emotional support where needed. She served two years as President of the Friends of the Weaver Library in South Gate, and one of her volunteer activities was to tutor people in learning to read and write English. As an avid quilter, she also supervised the making of two quilts that were raffled off in fundraisers for the Library, enabling them to buy a $6000 General Educational Development System. She and her husband had been members of the South Gate Baptist Church since 1940. She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Gover of Albuquerque, New Mexico, one son, James W. Prater of Monroe, Oregon; three grandchildren, Jeffrey N. Clark of Beaumont, Calif., Preston Wade Prater of W. Los Angeles, and Cynthia A. Chase of Salem, Oregon; three nephews, four nieces and numerous cousins. Services are pending with Rose Hill Memorial Park, Whittier. Published in the Los Angeles Times on 3/25/2003.
