      March 27, 1918 - April 25, 2016

HEYBURN | George Edward Hellewell, 98, of Heyburn, passed away Monday, April 25, 2016, at Minidoka Memorial Hospital.

George and his twin, John (who passed away shortly after birth), was born March 27, 1918, in Heyburn, Idaho to James Burrup and Elizabeth Liechty Hellewell. George attended school and graduated from Heyburn High School. After graduating, he worked for D.P. Blincoe and helped level down an 80 acre farm for a year. He had four head of horses and a walking scraper. He would work for eight hours a day for $1, furnishing his own dinner. They then planted it to potatoes and Mr. Blincoe told George if he would irrigate nights for him on the potatoes that he would see him through college that year, plus he would pay him $1 to work from six at night to six in the morning, until time for school to start. George took him up on the offer and when school started Mr. Blincoe gave him $50 to get some clothes and each quarter of college sent $68.00.

George was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities. He was called on a mission for the LDS Church to Switzerland but because of World War II was assigned to the Texas Mission instead serving from 1939 to 1942. After his mission service, he joined the US Navy where he became a registered male nurse and was assigned to the American Theater South Pacific. After his military service he attended the L.D.S. Business College in Salt Lake City and then worked as a bookkeeper for Cassia Lumber and Seed Co. in Burley for two years.

In 1952, he received his BA degree from the Utah State Agriculture College, in Logan, Utah and taught school in Sweet Home, Oregon for two years and in Filer, Id for three years. He decided to get his Masters Degree at Brigham Young University and then taught school at the Utah State Reform School for a few years, eight years for the Minidoka County School District and for the Alameda Jr. High in Pocatello, Idaho for 15 years. He also taught classes at the Idaho State University and received his PHD degree from the University.

George married Donna Ion Harris on June 22, 1950, and had seven children. They later divorced in 1971. He married Charlotte Jean Bradshaw on September 25, 1982, in the Jordan River Temple. Shortly after their marriage, they served a mission to British Columbia, Canada where he served as Branch President and then retired to Heyburn where they have since resided.

George is survived by his wife, Charlotte Hellewell, of Heyburn; children, Terrilee (Douglas) Jensen, Carol (Mike) Caldwell, George E. Jr. (LoaLyn) Hellewell, John (Helayne) Hellewell, Leslie ( LeAnn) Hellewell, Mike (Nancy) Hellewell, and Becky (Thad) Dungan; stepchildren, Scott (Debbie) Bradshaw and Darin (Linda) Bradshaw; 35 grandchildren; and 35 great grandchildren.
